Urban stormwater modelling approaches in NZ and the UK

Between 2019 and 2020 Metis Consultants and Awa Environmental collaborated to deliver eleven large urban stormwater models in the United Kingdom. Understanding the operational cost of sustainable drainage systems

There is wide industry agreement that Water Sensitive Design (WSD) / Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) are essential parts of the urban drainage system to manage water quality and quantity. However, despite these approaches being common practice for more than 10yrs, there is limited knowledge around the long-term operational costs of these features.

Madeley Road – 112 Bus Route

Metis was engaged by Ealing to accommodate a Transport for London (TfL) bus route while mitigating the impact of the buses on the residents.

WSUD in Sutton Schools

Having supported Sutton in securing Environment Agency Grant in Aid funding, Metis were commissioned to develop WSUD designs on seven school sites and one council site, to mitigate flooding to over 100 properties and deliver environmental benefits.

With their road maintenance budget coming under pressure, South Gloucestershire appointed Metis to utilise investment modelling techniques to build a business case to defend the budget.

South London Road Asset Management Consortium – Quarterly Workshops

Metis has been supporting the Consortium since 2010, structured around quarterly workshops with work activities carried out with individual boroughs or independently between workshops.

Hierarchy Review & Redefinition

Metis have been involved in updating network hierarchies for various authorities, aligning these with a risk-based approach as required under the Code of Practice (2016).

Commuted Sums Tool

Central Bedfordshire Council commissioned Metis to develop a tool to estimate the cost of maintaining traditional and sustainable drainage systems as well as road and other asset types.

Newton Park Flood Alleviation and River Restoration Project

The park originally flooded after heavy rainfall causing damage to residential properties around and downstream of the park. Metis gained funding for and designed the Newton Park West Flood Storage Area and River Restoration Scheme.

Seven Kings Water - Flood Mitigation Feasibility Study

Funding was granted to the London Borough of Redbridge to investigate the flood mechanisms and identify potential flood mitigation options at Westwood Recreation Ground on the Seven Kings Water river.

Flood Risk Management Services for Multiple London Boroughs

As the single supplier of the flood risk management lot of the Roads and Transport Services Framework, Metis provide Ealing and approx. 60% of London Boroughs with consultancy support.

Resource Consent Reviews

Since 2018, Metis have provided support to Lewisham’s Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) regarding their statutory consultee role for surface water drainage proposals submitted for major development.

Hounslow - Lead Local Flood Authority In-House Support

Following Metis’ assistance in creating their flood risk asset register in 2014, Metis was commissioned by Hounslow to provide regular Lead Local Flood Authority support in progressing their duties under the Flood and Water Management Act (2010).

Linden Lodge – Flood Risk Assessment and WSUDs

Metis developed a Flood Risk Assessment and accompanying Sustainable Drainage Strategy to facilitate improvements to the Linden Lodge Kennels & Cattery, a site located within a functional floodplain.

Birches Trading Estate – Flood Mitigation

Following a series of flooding incidents in the Birches Industrial Estate in East Grinstead, Metis were commissioned to investigate the causes of the flooding, undertake options appraisal and detailed design of a preferred option, before leading the procurement phase and contract administration during construction.

Metis provided design consultancy support to Kier Highways to develop the preliminary and detailed design of TfL’s Road network renewal programme.
